Martin, who took over in October 2023, focuses on revitalizing the pub while preserving its traditional charm. With a cozy fireplace as the gathering spot and local legends—including a resident ghost—the pub invites guests to enjoy pints and stories. The Gardeners Arms in Tostock: A Perfect Motorhome Stopover

A Historic Pub with Timeless Charm

When we, the soon to be world famous Pint Chasers, rolled up to The Gardeners Arms in Tostock, we expected another day at the office: we’d sip a pint, snap a few photos, and interview the host. But what we encountered at Brit Stop EA33 was far more than just another stop on our tour. It turned into one of those evenings that stays with you long after you finish your pint.

Tucked away in the charming village of Tostock, The Gardeners Arms is a slice of history that still manages to feel alive and relevant today. The pub, with its timber-framed structure over old brick foundations, dates back to the 1500s. As you walk in, you’re struck by the atmosphere—part rustic, part homely, and all heart. It’s the kind of place whose history feels present and intriguing, much like the many dark beams criss-crossing the ceiling that are believed to have been repurposed from old ships.

Meet Martin, the New Landlord of The Gardeners Arms

Martin, the new landlord, took over the pub in October 2023. He acquired it from its previous owner who had managed it for 14 years, and has already begun renovations, with more plans on the horizon. His ethos is simple: “I want to go backwards to go forwards.” He’s not interested in chasing the latest trends; instead, he’s focused on preserving and revitalising the essence of a traditional English pub. “There’s a gap in the market for people my age,” he says, he’s making the pub a real location for the ‘distinguished gentleman.’

As we settled in with our pints, we quickly realised this wasn’t going to be just another routine host visit. The pub’s rich history, coupled with Martin’s enthusiasm for its future, made it impossible not to get drawn in. The bar itself is a testament to centuries gone by, with visible brick foundations and a fireplace surrounded by white stones that Martin believes were sourced from the ruins of Bury St Edmunds Abbey. “Don’t quote me on it,” he says with a laugh, “but I believe those stones were stolen, hidden away, and then obviously repurposed.”

Cosying Up by the Fireplace

The fireplace is the heart of The Gardeners Arms, especially during the colder months. Martin regaled us with tales of how, in winter, the fireplace becomes a gathering point for locals and visitors alike. “The fireplace is a huge draw,” he told us. “In the winter, everyone gravitates toward it. Whoever sits closest becomes the ‘fire officer’—their job is to feed the fire, and if it goes out, it’s their fault!” We couldn’t help but chuckle along as he quipped the evening away.

Martin’s Personal Touch: From Pints to Paranormal Tales

The local cribbage champions also frequent the pub, and their trophy sits proudly behind the bar. They suck their teeth as Martin carefully pours Asa his Guinness, making bets on whether or not it’ll be an up-to-standard pour. Martin whips out his tape measure and declares the head a perfect 17 millimetres thick. He hands it proudly across the bar to Asa. This was not an entirely serious skit, but it gives you a glimpse of his character and his keenness to get things right. When it comes to Ales, The Gardeners has Woodfordes Wherry on tap seven days a week, and during our visit, Abbott Ale was in rotation. While cocktails aren’t typically on the menu, Martin has a soft spot for bourbon Old Fashioneds, and if you tell him the Pint Chasers sent you, he might just make you one. Come winter, you might be lucky enough to catch the not-yet-famous ‘Bloody Mary Buffet’, a spread of Bloody Marys served five different ways.

As the evening wore on, we learned about George, the pub’s resident ghost. Legend has it that George was a former landlord, and his spirit still lingers. A small Monopoly-sized boot hangs above the bar, and Martin warned us never to move it. “Last time it was moved,” he said with a serious nod, “there was a flood and a fire.”

A Perfect Ending to a Memorable Visit

The night ended on a peaceful note as we retired to our motorhome parked in the quiet car park. The outdoor toilets, which Martin calls a “proper outdoor privy,” were a convenient and welcome touch for our stay. We slept soundly, knowing we’d found a gem in The Gardeners Arms—a place where history, hospitality, and a good pint come together in perfect harmony.

Our visit to The Gardeners Arms wasn’t just another stop; it was a reminder of why we started the Pint Chasers tour in the first place. It’s about discovering the unique character of each host and the people who make them the special places they are. Martin and The Gardeners Arms have certainly left their mark on us, and we’ll be back for another pint, a chat, and perhaps another story or two by the fire.

Cheers, Lois and Asa – The Pint Chasers
